I took the name for my blog from the American Indian Cowboy Humorist and Trick Roper Will Rogers. Of the United States of his day, he said: "What the country needs is dirtier fingernails and cleaner minds." After a few years of urban and suburban life as a journalism grad student, and then as working journalist, I came to the think that I need some of the same.

 

My husband Tim and I left our jobs and set our sites south to Mexico and Central America. It's a region that's grossly under-reported and there's no shortage of stories--stories of all stripes--to be told there. We plan to live out of a converted AWD minivan and write those stories when and where we can. It's a very different life than the one we'd been living. My mind feels cleaner already.
